NEPAL TOURISM

Welcome to Chitwan – Nepal's Wildlife Paradise

CHITWAN

Chitwan, one of Nepal's most celebrated travel destinations and the gateway to the magnificent Chitwan National Park, the country's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in the fertile subtropical plains of southern Nepal, Chitwan offers a remarkable contrast to the towering Himalayan landscapes found elsewhere in the country. Instead of snow-covered peaks, visitors are welcomed by dense sal forests, expansive grasslands, tranquil rivers, wetlands, and an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, making it one of the finest wildlife destinations in Asia.

Established in 1973 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, Chitwan National Park covers more than 950 square kilometres of protected wilderness. The park is internationally recognized for its outstanding biodiversity and successful conservation programmes, particularly for the protection of the endangered Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. It is also home to Asian elephants, sloth bears, leopards, wild boars, sambar deer, spotted deer, gaur (Indian bison), mugger crocodiles, the endangered gharial crocodile, and over 540 species of birds, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers.

One of the most exciting experiences in Chitwan is embarking on a jeep safari through the national park. Travelling along forest trails and open grasslands with experienced naturalist guides, visitors have the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Every safari is a unique adventure, offering the possibility of spotting rhinoceroses grazing in the grasslands, herds of deer roaming through the forest, crocodiles basking along riverbanks, colourful birds soaring overhead, and, for the fortunate few, a glimpse of the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.

Chitwan also offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can relax amid the sounds of nature, enjoy riverside sunsets, and experience the warm hospitality of the local communities. Whether staying in a luxury jungle resort or a traditional eco-lodge, guests are welcomed with authentic Nepali hospitality and opportunities to savour local cuisine inspired by the traditions of the Terai region.

A visit to Chitwan is much more than a wildlife excursion—it is an opportunity to connect with nature, witness one of the world's most successful conservation areas, and experience the unique cultural heritage of Nepal's southern plains. Combining thrilling jungle adventures, extraordinary biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and vibrant indigenous traditions, Chitwan offers an unforgettable journey that perfectly complements Nepal's majestic mountains, ancient heritage, and spiritual landmarks. Whether you are an adventurer, wildlife enthusiast, photographer, or cultural explorer, Chitwan promises memories that will last a lifetime
